We are bringing back the GUMBO music series hosted by Wan and Chi with Music by DJ Deemaks, DJ Donet and DJ Sean Sax this time at two locations on the same night! On February 5, the party will start at the Royal Ontario Museum’s (ROM) Friday Night Live from 7–11pm. We have invited choreographers Esie Mensah and Pulga Muchochoma to first bring you up to speed with the latest dances from Africa and the Caribbean. The party then continues at Tattoo on Queen West from11:30pm. If you come to the ROM GUMBO party you have a chance to get a $5 voucher off the door ticket price for the after party. PLEASE NOTE: ROM's FNLROM TICKETS CAN ONLY BE PURCHASED FROM THEIR WEBSITE
Everybody prepares the flavourful Gumbo soup in their own way and call it by their own name. The Gumbo soup as it is known in Louisiana is called Okro or draw soup in Nigeria, Callalo in Trinidad and Quimbombo in Cuba.
The thought behind the new GUMBO music series is similarly as complex as it is simple. It's a combination of sounds that overlap, blend and clash to create a delectable music palate. Only in it's fourth edition but quickly gaining notoriety as a sweaty dancey sure thing, GUMBO debuted in Kensington Market last Caribana Thursday and has even made its way down to New Orleans for a special edition where it was a part of SUPAFRIK Weekend.
GUMBO is the connection between Afrobeats and Soca that intersects with Dancehall and overlaps with Samba, Baille funk and Afro house, with a dash of hip hop & R&B. They feed off each other and they all feed us. Imagine Black Coffee + Shabba Ranks + Machel Montano + WizKid all in the sound system and you end up with GUMBO. This is what you get when a Supafrik and a Shaman meet. We select the DJs, they play the music and you bring the vibes. Together we make GUMBO.
