Hard-edge is a technique or style of painting that consists of two paint colours butting up against each other with little to no blending. The term was coined by writer, curator and Los Angeles Times art critic Jules Langsner to describe the work of painters from California, who, in their reaction to the more painterly or gestural forms of Abstract Expressionism, adopted a knowingly impersonal paint application and delineated areas of colour with particular sharpness and clarity.

Artists associated with Hard-edge painting include Al Held, Ellsworth Kelly, Alexander Liberman, Brice Marden, Kenneth Noland, Ad Reinhardt, and Agnes Martin.

Facilitator Shannon Pawliw, has used this technique in various ways throughout her work. You will learn how best to keep a clean edge on a variety of surfaces, what masking tapes are best in a variety of use cases, and best practices overall.

The workshop fee includes:

  • hard-edge painting demo using a variety of water-based media
  • a variety of surfaces and materials to experiment with
  • hands-on experimentation
  • at least one painting surface to experiment on and take home
  • all other materials and supplies

Optional: bring a piece that you've been working on and Shannon will guide you through your hard-edge options

We are going to be playing with art materials, so we might get a little messy! There are aprons, but please wear clothing that you're not afraid to get paint on. Neither the facilitator nor the venue is responsible for damaged clothing.

This workshop is open to humans aged 15 or older of any skill level.
