Description

DESCRIPTION

This FREE 2 day event is open to staff of health and social service organizations - we encourage both management and front line staff to attend. There will be a mixture of presentations, panel discussions and group networking. Lunch and snacks will be provided.

  • Registration: 8:30am
  • Symposium starts: 9:00am
  • Finish by 4:30pm

Topics will include:

  • Stigma towards people who use drugs, including media and language
  • Harm Reduction: Philosophy, Practice and Programs
  • The Overdose Crisis: opioid drugs; overdose prevention strategies including naloxone and Overdose Prevention Sites
  • Population specific considerations

Breakout Sessions will take a deeper look at opportunities for, and challenges around, harm reduction.

Please select the three areas of focus that most interest you. We will select three topics with the most interest and you will be able to attend two of them.

1. Indigenous perspectives

Harm Reduction Principles and Traditional Ways of Thinking have many similarities. There are good stories in communities doing innovative work but there are many challenges in working from a Harm Reduction framework.

2. Supporting trans folks

Does your agency still have gendered bathrooms? Not sure which pronoun to use with someone? How can we reduce barriers to services and better support trans individuals?

3. Naloxone – Get ready. Get trained. Save lives.

Naloxone is a safe, freely available medication that can be used to save someone’s life if they overdose on drugs such as fentanyl or heroin.

4. Low barrier services

Can agency policies be developed or improved to better support people who use drugs? Are you involving people who use drugs in the development, design and delivery of programs and services?

5. Working with women

How can we better support women when many face unique social and structural challenges to accessing services? How can we create safer spaces?
