About this event

Join Jessica Posner Odede and Joel Spicer, CEOs of Girl Effect and Nutrition International, and 21 year old tech-enabled girl ambassador Shamsiyya Abubakar Ahmad, for an evening reception on the importance of encouraging better nutrition habits among adolescent girls. Interact with the technology as Girl Effect and Nutrition International showcase how this innovative partnership harnesses the power of mobile to improve knowledge, attitudes, and nutrition practices among adolescent girls.

Jess Posner Odede is CEO of Girl Effect - a creative non-profit specialising in media, mobile, brand and international development. Working where girls are marginalised and vulnerable, Girl Effect builds youth brands and mobile platforms that millions of girls and boys love and interact with - from apps that build skills, to TV dramas that explore vital issues, to magazines written and distributed by girls.

In 2009 she co-founded Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO). Based in Kenya, SHOFCO catalyses large-scale transformation in urban slums by providing critical services, community advocacy platforms, education and leadership development for girls and women. In August 2018, SHOFCO received the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize - the world’s largest annual humanitarian award presented to non-profit organisations judged to have made extraordinary contributions toward alleviating human suffering.

Jess is a New York Times bestselling author and has been featured in The New York Times, Vogue Magazine, on CNN, and by TED. She was awarded the prestigious David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award in May 2016.

Shamsiyya Abubakar is a 21 year old TEGA from Kano, Northern Nigeria. Shamsiyya joined Girl Effect's TEGA (Technology Enabled Girl Ambassador) programme at 16 years old becoming a qualified qualitative digital researcher. Her role as a TEGA sees her using mobile technology and a bespoke TEGA app to collect authentic insights on the lives of girls in some of the most remote and marginalised communities in Nigeria. Shamsiyya says "being a TEGA has had a huge impact on my life. It has taught me valuable lessons in confidence, patience and curiosity". Aside from being a TEGA, Shamsiyya is studying for a degree in Chemistry at Kano University of Science and Technology.
