Description

The OHA is pleased to be hosting, in partnership with Gladstone Nurseries and Athena Acres, the first public tours of the farms in our Grower Trial Program! Both these operations planted ten acres each in high-density hazelnuts in Spring 2016 and will be welcoming the public to their farms to share their first-year experiences.

You may attend the full day tour beginning at Gladstone Nurseries and ending at Athena Acres or join us for either the morning or afternoon tour. Travel time between the two farms is 35 minutes.

9:00 AM: Arrival at Gladstone Nurseries:

9:15 AM - 12:00 PM: Tour of Gladstone Nurseries and planting demonstration. Discussion topics: tree planting 101, potted stock vs. bare root, soil science, intercropping, owls and IPM, converting from cash crop lands, integrated vegetation management.

12:00 PM - 12:30 PM: Travel to Athena Acres:

Parking space is limited at Athena Acres. Bus transportation between Gladstone Nurseries and Athena Acres will be provided free of charge. If you wish to take advantage of this option, please RSVP for the Bus Transportation ticket.

12:30 - PM - 1:00 PM: Arrival at Athena Acres and lunch provided by OHA.

1:00 PM - 3:30 PM: Tour of Athena Acres, layout and planting demonstration. Discussion topics: establishment of 2014 and 2015 plantings, planting layout, planting spacing, general establishment practices, 2016 orchard layout orientation and general description, layout demonstration discussion with stringline and measuring device versus alternative mechanized layout, augering holes discussion with tractor-mounted auger for demonstration, weed control, cataloguing trees and chain of custody records, shelters and tree protection, pest control & IPM.

3:30 PM - 4:00 PM: Bus return to Gladstone Nurseries and departure.

This tour is free to attend and open to all. Refreshments will be provided!
