Course Length: Full Day

Prerequisite: Alberta Labour collaborated with the Canadian Centre of Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) to produce a free 2-hour online e-Course for health and safety committee and/or representatives. This e-Course must be taken by all health and safety committee members and/or health and safety representatives prior to attendance at CCSA’s Health and Safety Committees/Health and Safety Representatives course.

*Proof of the e-Course completion must be submitted with your registration. Please scan and email a copy of your course completion certificate to ohs@ab-ccsa.ca. Participants who have not submitted proof of the prerequisite online course will not be able to take the CCSA training.

**Please note that time allotted for lunch is 30 minutes. Please bring your own lunch/snacks as these sessions are NOT catered.

Course Description

Health and Safety Committees and/or HS Representatives are critical to safe and healthy workplaces. Learn about the mandatory requirements for health and safety committees and/or health and safety representatives in this classroom-based course. Additionally, health and safety committee members and/or HS representatives will learn how their participation contributes to a positive and effective committee and, in turn, how the health and safety committee and/or representatives works with the employer and all workers to ensure the health, safety and well-being of all persons in the workplace.

Purpose

HSCs and/or HS representatives form an important part of the internal responsibility system and help ensure that work site parties are aware of their roles and responsibilities in the workplace. They also promote awareness and interest in health and safety.

An HSC is a group of worker and employer representatives working together to identify and solve health and safety concerns at the work site.

A health and safety representative (HS representative) works with the employer to identify and solve health and safety concerns at the work site.

  • What is the role of health and safety committees and/or HS representatives regarding hazard assessment and control?
  • What is the role of health and safety committees and/or HS representatives regarding inspection of the work site and incident investigations?
  • What is the role of health and safety committees and/or HS representatives regarding work refusals?

Exercises

Participants receive classroom-based facilitation on the establishment of effective health and safety committees and/or health and safety representatives. Tools required for implementation are provided.
