SESSION DESCRIPTION

Starting with a brief presentation and diving into an interactive workshop, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge and Balance at Work will draw on the knowledge and resources of local business leaders and HR specialists (YOU!) to identify barriers to social inclusion and connectedness in your business/organization and, together, generate a list of creative solutions to building vital workplaces.

Why focus on social connection and vital workplaces? A lack of social connection, or loneliness, has become a rising public health concern. In fact, the 19th Surgeon General of the United States, Dr. Vivek H Murthy, has named it an epidemic. Weak social connections have been associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, dementia, depression and anxiety, and a reduction in lifespan similar to that caused by smoking 15 cigarettes a day. At work, loneliness leads to reduced performance, creativity, reasoning and decision making. So often, however, connections at work are limited to comparing notes on the weather as we pass each other in the hallway or team building activities that no one really wants to go to.

The Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough (CFGP) describes a vital community as “one where everyone has opportunities to belong.” Since the average Canadian spends 47% of their waking hours at work, creating vital workplaces is an essential part of building a vital community.

We are pleased to welcome the Executive Director of CFGP, John Good, who will introduce the session.

This breakfast session was inspired by CFGP’s Vital Conversations. In 2017, they brought over 700 Peterborough folks together to discuss the issues facing our city and co-create a community to-do list called “10 things to do to build a Vital Community.”
