Description

Co-presented by Dr. Vanessa Redditt and Jennifer Stone, this seminar will provide a guide to access to justice for refugees and in immigration matters as a key social determinant of health.

Objectives: Participants will

1. Gain a broad understanding of common migratory trajectories;

2. Recognize how accessing justice in refugee/immigration matters can impact health across the migratory/post-migratory trajectory;

3. Understand appropriate referrals for patients with immigration-related legal issues;

4. Acquire skills in enhancing clinical documentation they can provide to support patients with immigration-related issues

Vanessa Redditt (Dr. @Women's College Hospital - Crossroads Refugee Clinic)
Vanessa Redditt is a family physician at the Crossroads Refugee Clinic, a specialized primary care clinic for refugees at Women's College Hospital. She is interested in enhancing the health of marginalized individuals and communities through clinical care, health system improvement, and tackling social inequities. She is particularly passionate about immigrant and refugee health, as well as maternal and child health. She has worked clinically and programmatically in a variety of settings, including Rwanda, Brazil, Moose Factory, and Malawi.

Jennifer Stone (@Health Justice Program)
Jennifer Stone is a Staff Lawyer at Neighbourhood Legal Services (NLS), and currently leads the Health Justice Program. Captured by experiences working in Namibia, Bosnia, and the UK, Jennifer's legal career has focused on serving low-income clients in refugee, immigration and citizenship matters. She co-founded a legal clinic for refugee claimants in Hong Kong in 2006, which thrives today as the Justice Centre Hong Kong. Jennifer returned to Canada and began working at NLS in 2010, serving newcomer communities in Toronto's downtown east neighbourhoods. She served on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Council for Refugees from 2014-2018 and is currently co-chair of the CCR's Legal Affairs Committee.
