Led by the Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), the Innovation Hub of St. Lawrence College and the Dunin-Deshpande Queen’s Innovation Centre as part of the HI YGK health innovation initiative, join local health innovation experts to learn about KHSC’s priority innovation themes, potential paths for innovative ideas, what it takes to test innovations in a hospital setting and how to navigate hospital procurement processes.

Outcomes from this session include:

• Learn how KHSC defines innovation in a hospital context.

• Gain insight into the top problems which can be addressed by innovation.

• Walk away with an understanding of how to test innovations in hospital settings and how to navigate the procurement process.

About the Experts:

Dr. David Pichora, President & Chief Executive Officer of KHSC – Dr. David Pichora serves as President & Chief Executive Officer of Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC), an academic tertiary care centre serving a population of 500,000 people from across southeastern Ontario. In 2017, Hotel Dieu Hospital and Kingston General Hospital came together to form Kingston Health Sciences Centre (KHSC) and Dr. David Pichora was chosen as its inaugural President and CEO. An orthopedic surgeon, he is also a Professor of Surgery and of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Queen’s University and has served on the medical staff at Hotel Dieu and Kingston General Hospital sites since 1986. Prior to accepting the role as the President and CEO of KHSC, David held the position of Chief Executive Officer of Hotel Dieu Hospital and, prior to that, as its Chief of Staff. He also served as divisional chair of orthopedic surgery at Queen’s University, Hotel Dieu and Kingston General Hospitals

Dr. Elizabeth Eisenhauer, KHSC Innovation Lead –Dr. Eisenhauer is a Canadian oncologist who spent a large portion of her career undertaking phase I and II trials of novel cancer therapies through her role as Director of the Investigational New Drug Program in the Canadian Cancer Trials Group. She is an Emerita professor in the Department of Oncology at Queen's University in Kingston ON Canada, and was Department Head from 2012-2017. In 2018 she became Innovation lead at Kingston Health Sciences Centre. She is an Officer of the Order of Canada (2017) and in 2021 received the Canada Gairdner Wightman award in recognition of her contributions to cancer research and leadership internationally.

Dr. Mike Fitzpatrick, Chief of Staff & Executive Vice President Medical and Academic Affairs of KHSC – Dr. Fitzpatrick serves as the Chief of Staff and Chair of the Medical Advisory Committee of KHSC. He is the EVP of Medical Affairs (Chief of Medical Affairs – Mr. Chris Gillies) and his responsibilities also include oversight of Ambulatory Care (with Mr. Chris Gillies), Pharmacy and the Innovation portfolio (Innovation Lead: Dr. Elizabeth Eisenhauer) at KHSC. The inclusion of ambulatory services with innovation in this portfolio is synergistic and aims to harness innovative approaches to enhance access to ambulatory care for patients in southeast Ontario. Dr. Fitzpatrick is a Professor of Medicine (Respirology) and of Biomedical & Molecular Sciences at Queen’s University. Prior to his current role he served as Chief of Staff & Vice President of Medical Affairs at Hotel Dieu Hospital and he is a former Chair of the Division of Respirology & Sleep Medicine, Department of Medicine, at Queen’s University, Hotel Dieu and Kingston General Hospitals..

Paul McAuley, CEO at Shared Support Services Southeastern Ontario (3SO) and Executive Lead SE Regional Healthcare Information System (HIS)– Paul has over two decades of progressively responsible leadership experience in health care in Southeast Ontario. He has worked in hospital, regional and LHIN roles in a wide range or areas including information management, strategic planning, leadership development and supply chain. Paul is currently the CEO of 3SO who manage all procurement and inventory activities for the 6 hospitals in SE Ontario. He has Bachelor and Master’s Degrees in Applied Science from the University of Waterloo as well as a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from McMaster University and has completed the Advanced Health Leadership Program at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto.

About Health Innovation Kingston (HI YGK):

As part of a FedDev Ontario investment the City of Kingston in partnership with Queen’s University, St. Lawrence College, Kingston Health Sciences Centre, and Kingston Economic Development Corporation, the project, called HI YGK, has brought some of the region’s most notable post-secondary and health care institutions together to position Kingston as a place to develop, test, and commercialize innovative solutions for the health sector. This collaboration is leveraging three technology development labs to support local R&D needs and establish new business advisory supports to help entrepreneurs and SMEs commercialize health innovations and scale up their companies.
