Event description

Description

The goal of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues (EFCL) is to enhance the quality of life in Edmonton by supporting the community league movement. The EFCL and community leagues are directly involved in Council initiatives ranging from Live Active, Health and Recreation, Active Transportation, Child Friendly Edmonton, and Winter Cities to Community Hubs. Community leagues in particular play an integral role in shaping citizen’s well-being through their advocacy around physical neighbourhoods and work on social programs. Register for this session to learn more about the role of community leagues in building healthy, connected communities. There will be interactive opportunities for community leagues to discuss related issues with one another, brainstorm short- and long-term solutions that can be implemented, and provide suggestions for support to the EFCL.

Our guest speaker is Dr. Karen Lee, MD, MHSc, FRCPC, an Associate Professor of Public Health & Preventive Medicine in the University of Alberta’s Department of Medicine. Dr. Lee recently returned to Canada from a decade and a half away in the U.S., undertaking work first for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Epidemic Intelligence Service and the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention, followed by her position for nearly 9 years in the New York City (NYC) Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as Deputy to the Assistant Commissioner of Chronic Disease Prevention and Control, and Inaugural Director of Healthy Built Environments during Mayor Bloomberg’s administration. She has acted as Special Advisor to multiple World Health Organization regional offices on intersectoral collaboration issues to address the social and environmental determinants of health, and to improve health equity. Her work has focused on translating the science on improving the physical and social environments in our communities for health, into implementing feasible actions to improve our community environments to address our current epidemics like diabetes, heart disease, cancers and mental health issues. For more information on her work and access to free resources, visit www.drkarenlee.com.

Please note this session is for community league members only.
