Event description

Description

Music@ Mill Road is excited to announce another "Katie Diamond's Sunday Jazz Cabaret" with The Helen Glover Quintet.

Helen loves to perform the vocal standards of the Great American Songbook, from the Roaring 20s to the sophistication of the Bossa Nova 60s.

Her professional debut was in New Zealand with the Everglades Folk Trio, but her singing career goes back even further. When she was 12 years old she won a small silver cup for her performance of I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus and was awarded the title of "Best Entertainer in the Competitions” at the Motueka Musical Competitions, Motueka, New Zealand.

After moving to Ottawa, she performed with Rare Vintage Dinner Theatre, and since then she has gravitated towards jazz and the popular music of the war years. She has found her passion in exploring the emotion and fun of the songs of this period.

She is thrilled and honoured to be invited to perform with her quartet in the inaugural season of Katie Diamond’s Sunday Jazz Cabaret, in the Music at Mill Road Series in Chelsea, and for this occasion, has chosen the music that resonates with her most clearly, which continues to influence her journey through music and which still excites her performance.

Ron Ferguson, trumpet and fluegelhorn

Ron has been playing trumpet since the age of 10. He toured across Canada and the U.S and recorded with Holly Larocque and the Mark Ferguson Orchestra in “The Big Band Broadcast”. He plays with several Ottawa groups, including Constant Black and the Ottawa Jazz Orchestra.

Lu Frattaroli, drums

In the ‘70s Lu began to play drums, touching on classical, rudimental, and jazz styles. Lu has incorporated several early influences, including experiences in progressive rock and jazz fusion drumming, as well as his exposure to Indian Classical tabla music, into an exciting, inventive, and sensitive musical approach.

Ivan Matte, bass and guitar

Ivan Matte has ventured into many styles of music over his career, playing bass and guitar as sideman, leader and/or musical director in various latin, jazz, rock and big bands. He has also worked extensively in musical theatre, including shows such as the Rocky Horror Show, Cabaret, Guys and Dolls and Beatlemania.

Bert Waslander, piano

Bert studied classical piano in Holland in his youth but has long harboured a keen love of jazz. He learned Fats Waller tunes, forgot parts and learned to improvise. Rhythm and swing are what move him most, but he is increasingly drawn to ballad melodies with rich harmonies. In 1997 he became a founding member of the Glebop Jazz Trio. As well, he regularly plays in other small group settings, in a duo at Vineyards Wine Bar Bistro, and as a soloist.
