Event description

Helping Hearts: Free Hands only CPR and AED Training Event

When someone suffers from an Out-of-Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrest their chances of survival increase by almost 75% if Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is started and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is used.

Witnesses to Sudden Cardiac Arrests can do these two simple tasks prior to the arrival of professional responders safely.

On Thursday, 23rd November, BC Emergency Health Services in partnership with the Heart and Stroke Foundation are offering free training in Hands Only CPR and AED familiarization for people working at the Broadway Tech Centre. This training will make you a potential life saver in your place of work, at home and where you live.

Each session lasts for 30mins and includes videos on how to perform Hands Only CPR, how to use an AED and on the PulsePoint Respond App; as well as practical hands on experience of Hands Only CPR and the use of an AED.

At the end of the session you will be able to recognise when someone is having a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, what you can do and how to increase their chances of survival until professional responders arrive.

PulsePoint Respond App harnesses the power of new technologies in smartphones to alert CPR trained bystanders within walking distance of victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest in public places. Only about a third of Sudden Cardiac Arrest victims receive bystander CPR, and public access Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) are used less than 3% of the time when needed and available. The goal of the app is to engage additional bystanders in these lifesaving acts. If this situation was to truly materialize it would have a major impact on survival from Sudden Cardiac Arrest in BC.
