Helping your pre-teens and teens manage their emotions, make responsible decisions and feel and show empathy for others

Featuring Dr. Heather Henderson and Tamara Awad Lobe

Heather Henderson, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Psychology and the Director of the Social Development Lab at the University of Waterloo. Her research focuses on the impact of temperament (or early personality) on the development of self-regulation across childhood and adolescence. She is particularly interested in understanding skills that support social and academic self-regulation during developmental transition periods (e.g., transition to middle school, high school and post-secondary education). She will discuss these topics from her combined perspective as a researcher, an undergraduate instructor, and a parent.

Tamara Awad Lobe is a teacher with the WRDSB. Her classroom program has focused on independent and inquiry based programs that develop students critical thinking skills. She is curious how students can build resilience and self-regulation skills within a classroom setting and are then able to transfer those strategies into all part of their lives.

*These workshops are in response to parent feedback from the “Engaging Centennial Parents to Support Student Well-being” survey.

Funding has been made possible through a Parent Reaching Out grant from the Ministry of Education of Ontario.
