Time: 10:00 am - 2:30 pm
Location: UBC Botanical Garden, Garden Pavilion; Check in at the Main Entrance, 6804 SW Marine Drive.
Instructors: Beryl Zhuang

Learn tips and techniques for making your very own herbarium vouchers of native plants. Participants will go for a walk in the garden to collect native plants and discover how specimens are curated in a herbarium for scientific research. There will be hands-on instruction on collecting, pressing, and mounting techniques to prepare specimens suitable for creative art and scientific projects. Following the workshop, participants will take their own mounted specimen home.

Participants will gain experience with:

  • Collecting specific plants from UBC Botanical Garden
  • Pressing and drying plants to make a herbarium voucher
  • Learning how dried plant collection is curated for scientific research
  • Mounting dried plant specimens onto paper

Beryl Zhuang is the Curatorial Coordinator at the UBC Botanical Garden where she is responsible for the plant data management. She graduated with an M.Sc in bioinformatics from UBC and enjoys analyzing biodiversity data. She is passionate about making beautiful specimens for plant documentation.

Important Notes: Please bring pruning shears or secateurs if you have them. Gardening gloves are optional but recommended. Please bring your lunch. Light snacks will be provided. Please dress for the weather and bring footwear suitable for all terrains. This workshop will go ahead rain or shine. This workshop will be indoors and outdoors.

Parking: Guests must register their license plates and pay for parking at the meter as the class will be over the 3-hour free parking policy.

Cancellation Policies: A $5.00 processing fee per attendee is charged if cancellation notice is less than 7 days prior to your scheduled program. There is no fee for transferring the registration to another person. Cancellations can be made by contacting garden.programs@ubc.ca. In the event that a program is cancelled by UBC Botanical Garden, we will offer the option of transferring to another program or obtaining a full refund.
