The Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) proudly presents the Herzberg Memorial Public Lecture, "Frugal Science in the Age of Curiosity," in honour of Nobel Laureate Dr. Gerhard Herzberg, longstanding member of the CAP, in recognition of Dr. Herzberg’s known desire to increase the awareness and appreciation of science amongst the public, particularly youth.
Frugal Science in the Age of Curiosity
Dr. Manu Prakash, Stanford University
Come and hear about how physics principles have been used to invent affordable technologies for global education, health, and science exploration.
Trained as a Physicist, Dr. Prakash is now an Associate Professor of Bioengineering and a member of the Graduate Program of Biophysics at Stanford University. He is the inventor of many “frugal” devices including the Foldscope, and is a Faculty Fellow of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and a MacArthur Fellow.

Are you a Teacher or Educator?
The SFU Department of Physics and CAP are hosting a workshop for local high school science teachers during the day of June 3, 2019. This workshop will include the opportunity to attend the Opening Plenary talk by the 2018 Physics Nobel Prize Winner, Canadian Dr. Donna Strickland. The main focus of the workshop sessions will be learning how to adapt current laboratory activities to the new BC Curriculum design. The workshop includes a FREE session on the use of Foldscope paper microscopes in the classroom.

There will be a FREE workshop session on the use of Foldscope paper microscopes in the classroom from 4:00pm-5:00pm on June 3rd, 2019. This is a part of a larger workshop, but teachers may choose to only attend the Foldscope session.
