Event description

Description

The Alberta Manufacturing and Fabrication Innovation [AMFI] Program is proud to present a one-day workshop on productivity enhancing welding fit-up and alignment solutions. The workshop, hosted by InnoTech Alberta’s Welding Engineering Group, will include technical presentations and hands-on equipment demonstrations.

When manufacturers identify welding operations as a possible bottleneck within their manufacturing line the highest productivity gains may not always be directly tied to the welding process itself. Through extensive work with fabricators in Western Canada, the Welding Engineering Group at InnoTech Alberta identified key areas where introduction of advanced solutions may have a substantial impact on overall efficiency of the welding operation.

Previous AMFI workshops addressed weld mechanisation and automation as well as advanced cutting and coping solutions. This workshop will showcase advanced fit-up and alignment solutions that reduce overall production time and enable utilization of advanced mechanized and automated welding solutions. Equipment vendors have been invited to provide technical information and demonstrate the latest in fit-up and alignment technologies. The day will also include presentations on Manufacturing Process Considerations, Energy Efficiency Alberta's Custom Energy Solutions for manufacturers, and an industry discussion panel.

Hands-on demonstrations will include the following solutions:

  • Laser probe with 8-axis arm that offers a comprehensive contact/non-contact metrology solution
  • Six degrees of freedom laser probe to measure hidden areas that are out of direct line of sight, as well as small, tight, hard-to-reach areas
  • Laser projection system that fully supports target less, feature-based alignment and templating without the use of reflectors by using known features, such as holes and corners, on objects or assemblies from CAD models
  • Ultra-portable laser scanner for fast capturing, straightforward, and highly accurate measurements of complex objects and buildings
  • Visual inspection CAD interface for mobile devices that converts 3D data into augmented reality
  • Precision made spacers that provide accurate gapping space in fit up procedures and eliminate wasted gap rods during fit-up
  • Double chain clamps that align and reform pipe and vessels into a desired position
  • Manual aligning and reforming clamps and bolts: clamp-on ring and weld-on styles
  • Post-weld laser 3D inspection system of weld and profile geometry to detect quality issues related to forming and the welding process for tube and pipe
  • Internal pneumatic line-up clamp for aligning two pipe joints for external welding of equal or unequal wall thicknesses

Additional equipment available for hands-on demonstrations includes:

  • High-speed compact digital pendulum weave welder for all positions with closed loop speed control.
  • Mobile torque reactive tube or pipe bevelling machine that locks to the bore of the pipe.
