About this event

Join the Ghost Watershed Alliance Society for a more challenging hike to the spectacular Hoodoo Hall. This hike will lead us into a canyon in the mountains walking along a creek bed where incredible hoodoos can be found.

When: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm on Sunday, August 7, 2022

Where: Entrance to TransAlta Road. Google Maps link

A good clearance 4WD vehicle is required to access the trail head via TransAlta Road, which is a gravel road in rather poor shape with deep potholes and larger rocks.

About the hike:

We will hike from the end of TransAlta Road to the national park boundary. It's mostly level past the first Ghost Lake and then gently up a side drainage without much of a trail. We pass the hoodoos and find our way into the Hidden Canyon and over boulders in the streambed we reach a small waterfall for a rest. Although there isn't much elevation gain involved, this is a longer hike and part of it is on rough or no trail.

Distance: app. 18 km

Elevation gain: app. 300 m

Rating: moderate to strenuous. You need to be sure-footed and physically fit for this hike. Participation in this event is at your own risk.

What to bring:

  • water and a packed lunch for yourself to enjoy at a viewpoint on the hillside
  • sturdy footwear suited for walking on river rock and water shoes to cross the river
  • layers of clothing for potentially changing weather conditions
  • mosquito repellent
  • sunscreen
  • bear spray, if you have one.

The event is free of charge. Donations are gratefully accepted to support GWAS's programs.
