SILVER DINNER 2017 - NOV 13 - TORONTO

Healthy Minds Canada’s Silver Dinner, now in its 12th year, has become one of Toronto’s premier mental health and addiction fundraising events.

The Silver Dinner is an inspiring and dynamic evening attended by over 400 Canadians who are interested in improving the well-being of those touched by mental illness and addiction.

Silver Dinner guests will enjoy an interactive reception which includes a moveable feast and an exciting silent auction, followed by an engaging and honest conversation with Alastair Campbell, our 2017 guest speaker.

Alastair will be share his personal journey with alcohol abuse, psychosis, and depression, as well as the history of both suicide and schizophrenia in his family. Alastair is a writer, communicator, and strategist best known for his role as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair’s spokesman, Press Secretary and Director of Communications.

Alastair is still active in politics and campaigns in Britain and abroad, serving as a leading advocate for mental health, as Ambassador for Time to Change, Mind, Rethink and Alcohol Concern.

More about Alastair

Alastair Campbell - former Downing Street Press Secretary (1997–2000) & Director of Communications and Strategy (2000–2003) for frmr British PM Tony Blair.  Currently a journalist, broadcaster, political aide and author.

Background

Campbell was admitted to hospital in 1986 after being detained by the police for his own safety (people noticed him behaving oddly). Following 5 days of in-patient “observance”, he admitted that he had been abusing alcohol to self-medicate after seeing a psychiatrist.  He sought treatment and is currently serving as an Ambassador for “Time to Change” and “Alcohol Concern”.  He is a Patron of “Maytree” (the country’s only charity for the suicidal) and “Kidstime” (for children of mentally ill parents) as well as a prominent supporter and advocate for the mental health anti-stigma campaigns, Time to Change, Time to Think, and Mind (all leading mental health organizations in the UK).  He also has a brother who died with Schizophrenia.
