Hockey Night - MRU Campus Conservatives
Fri, 2 December 2016, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM MST
Come out and enjoy a night of floor hockey. There is no cost to play, but please bring non-perishable food items to be donated to the Calgary Food Bank at the end of the night. With the stress of the end of a semester and the rush before Christmas, it is important to get out, enjoy yourselves, and take a moment to think of those less fortunate than you. 2016 has been a rough year in Alberta. No other time will this be more apparent than at Christmas.
People of all skill levels aged 14 or older may play. People of all ages may spectate.
Participant FAQs (Spectator FAQ's appear further down)
How long will I get to play?
It depends on the number of players, but expect a team of 10 with 4 players and a goalie on the floor at a time. You will get plenty of play time as floor hockey is a fast and tiring sport which means there will be frequent line changes. The game will last for 3, 20-minute periods with 15 minute breaks in between.
I cannot skate / I've never played hockey before. Can I still participate?
Of course! Hockey is Canada's game and we would be happy and eager to show you how to play. Floor hockey does not require any knowledge of skating as you play with shoes on a hardwood floor.
Will there by body checking?
Absolutely not! Body checking or excessively physical play will not be tolerated. Referees will be on hand to enforce these rules.
What equipment do I require?
You require clean gym shoes and a hockey helmet with a full face shield or cage. We have a limited number to give out if you don't have one, but please consider bringing your own because it will be fitted to your head specifically. You may bring your own stick, but keep in mind that floor hockey may cause excessive wear and tear on the blade. We have plastic stickets to give out if you don't have a stick. We also highly recommend hockey gloves. You can also wear soccer shin pads to protect from shot blocking.
We will provide goalie equipment, but if you may bring your own if you want.
All participants will be required to read and sign a waiver. Anyone under the age of 18 will also require a parent or guardian to sign the waiver. Please ensure you are healthy enough for physically-demanding sports.
What are the risks of injury?
Any physically demanding sport has some risk associated with it. We have taken necessary precautions to ensure your's and everyone else's safety, but not all possible risks can be completely eliminated. Therefore, it is important to understand and assess the risks associated. If you are not sure, play it safe and watch as a spectator. It will be just as fun.
What are my transport/parking options getting to the event?
Paid parking is available at Mount Royal University in Lot 2. Transit options include the 13/18 bus from downtown, the 20 bus from UofC/Heritage Station, the 72 bus from Chinook Station, the 73 bus from UofC and Westbrook Station. The 306 BRT route runs between Heritage and Westbrook via Mount Royal Univesity.
What do I need to bring to the event?
Please bring non-perishable food items for the Calgary Food Bank. Clean footwear will be required to enter the gym. If there is inclement weather, please bring a change of footwear. We discourage the wearing of boots inside the gym. Children are permitted to go sock-feet, but the gym floor is extremely slippery in socks. We will have a spot set aside to remove wet shoes and boots.
