Description

Holly Schmidt : Vanitas

Saturday June 10, 1:30 - 4:30pm

Richmond Art Gallery - 7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond, BC

For the Our Home and Native Bloom installation at Richmond City Hall, Richmond Art Gallery offers a unique workshop with Vancouver artist Holly Schmidt.

Workshop Details:

Explore the vanitas characteristics of Dutch still life painting through the creation of floral arrangements. The workshop will begin with a look at how these painters captured the passing of earthly life through imagery of abundant bouquets on the verge of decay. Following this, participants will be invited to forage for foliage in Minoru Park, and with a range of local blossoms create their own still life to be photographed. Participants are welcome to take their arrangements at the end of the workshop. Digital images of their arrangement will be shared. The first iteration of this workshop was hosted by Arts Assembly (artsassembly.ca) in September 2016.

The workshop will begin at the Richmond Art Gallery and will eventually move to the Richmond City Hall Plaza one block away ( This portion of the event will be held outdoors). Participants are asked to bring their own vase (a vase or bowl with a wide mouth is recommended) and a pair of small pruners.
