Description

The Homeless Prevention 'mini' Conference will bring together interested community members, politicians and other decision makers and front line workers and managers from the social service sector to discuss preventing homelessness in our community.

Tuesday March. 19

Opening Remarks - Mayor Dan Carter - personal reflections

Keynote Address - Dr. Stephen Gaetz (York University's Homeless Hub) & Melanie Redman (A Way Home) will speak about The Homeless Hub's recent work on prevention

Workshops

Salvation Army - The Salvation Army will share what is being done in the Durham Region with regards to Landlords and building a system/database to make housing more accessible.

Service Canada - A representative from Service Canada will present on new funding available for programs that are addressing prevention and how you can access these funds

Coordinated Access - The Durham Region Social Service Department will present on efforts taken to bring a coordinated access approach to the Durham Region.

Federation of Metro Tennants Association (FEMA) - FEMA will present one workshop on what they are doing with their Tennant School Project and another on their Community Development Project.

KIROS - Blanket Exercise - Reconciliation through Education and Understanding. The KAIROS Blanket Exercise™ program is a unique, participatory history lesson – developed in collaboration with Indigenous Elders, knowledge keepers and educators – that fosters truth, understanding, respect and reconciliation among Indigenous and non-indigenous peoples.


Wednesday, March. 20

Keynote - Michael Lethby is the ED of the RAFT in St. Catherines who is doing some innovative work with prevention and becoming involved in the school system helping to prevent homelessness before it occurs.

Workshops

Tyler Frederick - Tyler Frederick from UOIT will be presenting on his work with regards to prevention and will also be discussing peer inclusion as a strategy

Pamela Young - Dr. Young will be presenting on how to keep us as workers, mentally and emotionally healthy so that we can fully engage the individuals with whom we work

WRAP - Durham Mental Health Services will be presenting how their WRAP program works and how it can benefit individuals in our community at risk of homelessness.

Here At Home - A series of short documentaries produced by the National Film Board regarding homelessnes and housing




This 'mini' Conference is made possible through funding from the HPS (Homeless Prevention Stragety) program of the Federal Government of Canada and is open to any interested individuals.
