Event description

Description

INUIT INSPIRED PRINTMAKING - February 15 Inuit printmaking began with the people of Nunavut, then known as Kinngait, over 55 years ago. Walrus tusks or rocks were carved and then inked and printed onto paper. Students use scratch-foam to create prints inspired by Inuit images.

PYSANKY - March 23 Pysanky comes from the Ukrainian word “pysaty” meaning “to write”. The design is written with beeswax on a raw, white egg. Between each successively darker dye, more wax writing is added to cover up and preserve each colour in the final design. After the final background colour the egg is warmed up for easy wax removal and a completed design is revealed.

SELF PORTRAITS - April 20 Students explore self-portraits by looking at examples of artists such as Marc Chagall, Leonardo da Vinci and Frida Kahlo. Students explore aspects of self-identity and create their own self-portrait using pens and watercolour crayons.

lINOLEUM PRINTING - May 18 Using professional linoleum cutting tools, students carve their own designs into Safety-Kut blocks. These lino blocks are then inked and transferred onto specialty rag paper. Students are shown techniques for printing without a press to create stunning imagery. Parents must stay to assist younger children with the linoleum cutting tool being used.

Homeschool Art Day takes place once a month at the visual art studios located in St. Albert Place (5 St. Anne Street), St. Albert, AB. Professional art instructors lead children through fun, creative art projects that are designed to inspire, promote confidence and build technical skills. Art making also helps to develop abstract and critical thinking skills in children, which can equate to originality in problem solving skills later on.

Art Gallery of St. Albert is a not-for-profit public Art Gallery whose mandate is to provide enriching educational experiences that celebrate visual culture and artistic achievement through research, exhibition and interpretation. Exhibitions celebrate diversity, providing vision, inspiration and education for the community.

Please share this art making event with friends and family to ensure our maximum number of 15 students. If less than 6 students register for any art program, it will be cancelled two days prior and fees will be refunded.
