Our not-for-profit educational art programs are fun and engaging for families with children 5 to 13 years of age.

About this event

HOMESCHOOL ART THURSDAYS

January - June, 2022

In-person and virtual art programs take place from 1:30 to 3:00 pm every Thursday at the St. Albert Place Visual Art Studios and are led by experienced professional artist instructors.

IN-PERSON CLASSES: We have implemented comprehensive safety protocols to protect students and staff so that they can attend and safely enjoy our field trips. Learn more about our safety protocols here.

Additional safety protocols include:

-Those experiencing symptoms are required to stay home

-Increased cleaning of high-touch surfaces

-Individual supplies for each student

-Hand sanitizer and gloves available in class

-Maximum class size of 10 students and socially distanced workspaces

VIRTUAL CLASSES (Only offered if Provincial restrictions change or if parents would like to get a group of families together for a virtual program): Art Kits will be ready for curb side pickup several days prior to the program date. We ask that any loaned art equipment be returned within 3 days of your program. Please contact Shannon at 780-651-5735 or email shannonv@artsandheritage.ca to find out how you can secure any of our listed programs for a group of friends to enjoy a virtual art making session together!

January 13, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • How to Draw Animals – Using the classic method of finding the shapes, we’ll draw some animals and then finish with an acrylic painting of a winter animal in the snow.

January 20, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Quilling – The process of working and rolling paper or fabric into simple or complex shapes that can combine to make a larger piece of artwork

January 27, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Anime Art: Intro to Manga – Welcome to the world of Anime! In this exciting class, artists will be taught the basics of the famous Japanese drawing style: Manga. They will learn to draw full body characters with added practice on eyes, noses, mouths, and hairstyles. Anata wa chōsen no junbi ga dekite imasu ka! (Are you ready for the challenge!)

February 10, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Felted Soap Stones – Make your own exfoliating bar of soap to use in the bath or shower with a variety of colourful sheep’s wool. When wrapped around a bar of soap and wet felted, you can create a perfectly useful work of art that cleans skin and won’t slip out of your hands.

February 17, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Mono-printing - Two methods of mono-printing: using oil sticks and tracing paper to make a print. Also adding paint to metal plates using a variety of tools and then pressed onto special printing papers to make one-of-a-kind prints for framing or gift cards.

February 24, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Arm Knitting - Who doesn’t love getting cozy on those cold winter nights? Master the basics of arm knitting with this easy-to-follow class, no experience required! Artists will learn how to cast on, stitch rows, and how to tie off and/or begin a new skein of yarn. Get ready to be yarned and dangerous!

March 3, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Anime Art: Intro to Manga and Beyond! – In this exciting class, artists will be taught the basics of the famous Japanese drawing style: Manga. Taken this class before? Sign up again for added practice and new worksheets!

March 10, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Acrylic Paint Pouring - Create a stunning abstract painting on canvas by experimenting with a combination of acrylic paints and non-toxic oils in tiny pouring cups. No brushes required!

March 17, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Wooden Panel Art: DIY Custom Wood Sign - Nothing is trendier than a farmhouse-classic piece of decor… except maybe one made by you, that’s worthy of your home, office or classroom! In this class artists will build a custom wood sign that looks professionally made. Choose from a variety of designs and learn how to stain wood, apply stencils, weed vinyl, and use different techniques for painting. Bring your creativity, willingness to learn and even a friend to share in the fun!

March 24, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Hand Stitching - Welcome Spring with this hand stitching project using needle and thread and a variety of colourful fabrics!

April 14, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Pysanky - Learn to decorate an egg using a kystka tool and melted beeswax. Then dip your egg in several different dye baths to reveal your incredible wax resist designs!

April 21, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Found Item/Assemblage Collage - Many artists collect items that have interesting shapes, colours, or texture. Collect a small box of items from around your home and learn how to assemble them on a piece of wood using a variety of adhesives to create a meaningful piece of abstract art.

April 28, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Spring Wreath - Celebrate the coming of spring by decorating a grapevine wreath with a variety of fabric, ribbon and special surprise decorations!

May 12, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Watercolours and Oil Pastels - Discover the pleasures of painting with watercolour and learn to adapt to its flow and unpredictable nature with this lovely Koi Project.

May 19, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Kaleidoscopes - Learn how to successfully reflect light through a triangular tunnel of foil within a tube. Add colourful transparent beads at one end to view fantastic patterns of light and colour!

May 26, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Scrumbling - Learn how to create a small piece of freeform crochet or knitting that can be joined to make a larger piece of freeform artwork for hanging or framing.

June 9, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Kites - Join us for a fun afternoon of kite making using colourful paper, bamboo sticks, ribbons, and string! Learn some of the best ways to construct a kite for soaring up in the sky with the gentle spring winds.

June 16, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Portrait Drawing - We’ll look at finding the shapes when drawing people and faces and finish up with a self-portrait using pencil and pencil crayons.

June 23, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Acrylic Painting - Follow step by step instructions, along with some new friends, and take home a lovely piece of acrylic art on canvas for yourself, friends, or family.

June 30, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $15 • Polymer Creations - Create your own unique jewelry piece or miniature sculpture! Polymer oven baked clay is fun and easy to use. Artists will learn to condition, sculpt, and assemble their creation using a variety of different techniques. Create a special gift for family or friends!
