GALLERY EXHIBITIONS:

REFUGIUM - Julya Hajnoczky (February 3 to March 19, 2022):

Through large scale photographs and installations, Julya Hajnoczky creates lonely still-life arrangements of natural specimens – plants, feathers, bones, fungi, and lichens. They are intimate and isolated portraits of specific ecosystems in Alberta. The exhibition seeks to “inspire wonder at the small, often overlooked details of the natural world, and encourage the viewer to consider their roles and responsibilities as members of the ecosystems that sustain us.”

February 9, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $8 • Tour & Art Activity: Following the tour, children will create their own small-scale still-life using natural elements such as seeds, dried grasses and plants pressed between a black backing board and a clear protective cover.

KEEP THEM SAFE - Jenny Keith (March 1 to April 16, 2022):

Held safely within the vault will be three large paintings of endangered animal species. Specifically looking to Alberta’s vast and varied landscape, Keith captures a woodland caribou, a grizzly bear, and a whooping crane in her signature style. Created specifically to be shown in AGSA’s vault, Keith carefully and tenderly grants viewers access to the fragile worlds of these animals.

March 9, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $8 • Tour & Art Activity: Following the tour, children will draw their favourite animal surrounded by a variety of natural elements found in and around their traditional environments.

FOR WOMEN WHO ROAR - Shana Wilson (March 24 to April 30, 2022):

Shana Wilson is an Edmonton based artist whose practice focuses on portraiture. For Women who Roar concentrates its attention on portraying female leaders and trailblazers. This ongoing series currently includes inspirational writers, activists, politicians, models, lawyers, artists, scholars, entrepreneurs, and athletes. Fifteen pieces will be hosted at AGSA, surrounding, and inspiring each visitor.

April 13, 2022 • 1:30 pm • $8 • Tour & Art Activity: Following the tour, children will create a small pencil crayon and watercolour portrait of someone who has inspired them to become more aware of the importance to achieve their highest potential.
