Event description
Learn how to make pretty and useful jewelry out of horse hair.

About this Event

Learn how to make pretty and useful jewelry out of horse hair. We will supply washed horse tail hair for your use or as a remembrance you can bring your horse’s tail hair or mane hair washed and laid straight on a towel to dry. Keep hair straight as it is easier to braid. If you don’t know how to braid with 3 strands, we can teach you as that is the only skill required. You will be provided with jewelry beads, accessories, glue and other equipment. If you don’t have clean horsetail hair, we can provide some for you.

Other Jewelry: Bring some cash as there will be some special beads for sale under $20 and some lightly used jewelry for sale for $5 and $2. If you have some slightly used jewelry to donate to WELCA, feel free to bring it along.

How to bring your horse’s hair: Clean and straight, ready to braid into jewelry.

1. Use small elastic show bands to bundle short and long hairs separately.

2. Cut one end, fold it over 25mm or an inch and tie hairs together tightly with small elastic bands. About 50 to 100 hairs per bundle, it doesn’t matter as long as each of the 3 bundles feels about equal.

3. Pull out any really short hairs that will stick out when you braid.

4. Run your fingers down the strand to find the shortest hair left and use scissors to cut the bundle to that length so all hairs are the same length. This ensures that the hairs won’t spring out of your artistic jewelry work.

5. Gather all your bundles and wash gently. I use Mane & Tail Shampoo and then Mane and Tail conditioner because I like the smell but I think any human shampoo and conditioner will do. I have also used scented Liquid Hand Soap. Rinse and dry flat.

6. Layout on a towel to dry and or roll in a towel, keeping the strands straight.

7. Bring to Workshop without bending or rolling – keep hairs straight in your car.
