Authentic Self, An Intro To Witnessing, created by Tyler Pennock
We change the world in many ways, and one way is through story. More importantly, how a story is represented can impact the world more than the story itself. Writing as Witness / Authentic self is about how stories are heard, and told. The workshop is intended to help us define the borders of our own experiences before we leap to describe an event. Too often people can take this essential part for granted, without knowing the impact they have in doing so. In exploring our relationship with an event or a person first, we re-enact our humanity.
Note: This workshop is based on an Indigenous story-ing practise that will not be discussed.
Tyler Pennock is two-spirit, was adopted from a Cree and Métis family around the Lesser Slave Lake area of Alberta. She is a graduate of Guelph University’s Creative Writing MFA program. They currently live in Toronto, where he has worked as an educator and community worker for over ten years
