On August 1, 2010, Michael Schratter, a Vancouver teacher and newspaper columnist, embarked on a global journey to cycle 40,000 km (the equatorial distance), crossing six continents and 33 countries and raising funds for the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).

Michael's mission was to circumnavigate the world, sharing stories with people in different countries, and in doing so to bring attention and awareness to the stigma surrounding mental illness.

People were invited to share their stories and make a promise to help end mental illness stigma on his website (http://ridedonthide.com/bc/learn-more/how-it-began/), where Michael shared photos, stories and reflections from the road.

The 2010-11 Ride Don't Hide campaign reached millions of people and raised $100,000 for CMHA's child and youth mental health programs. As a dedicated ambassador of mental health promotion, Michael continues to speak to schools and the public about mental illness to eliminate the stigma associated with it.

Michael's Route:

1 - cycled down the western seaboard of North, Central, and South America to Lima, Peru, then across the Andes in to Bolivia and Argentina

2 - left from Buenos Aires to Sydney, Australia

3 - cycled north along the eastern coast of Australia from Sydney to Cairns

4 - flew to Singapore, then cycled Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam to Hanoi

5 - then flew to Hong Kong, and then cycled the southeast coast of China to Shanghai

6 - then flew to Helsinki,Finland, cycled south through the Baltic European nations to the Mediterranean

7 - then west along the Mediterranean coast to the Rock of Gibraltar

8 - then into Morrocco, Africa

9 - from Casablanca, Morroco I flew to Halifax

10 - then across Canada to BC, all over BC, and then finished in Vancouver

In this meetup, Michael will share with us his story on why he embarked on a journey to cycle the equatorial distance of planet earth. He'll talk about journey and what it meant to him to complete it.

Michael will also talk about the annual Ride Don't Hide cycling event here in Vancouver.

Finally, Michael will also be talking about embarking on another around the world journey by the end of December travelling to 6 countries in 6 months with his wife and two sons.

Come join us as we restart the Travel and Live Free meetups! Please RSVP if you plan on attending and un-RSVP if you change your mind to make room for others. Seats are limited so please come on time in respect to the speaker and other attendees.
