Please join the Center for Japanese Research in welcoming Ichiro Matsuo, Fulbright Scholar (Journalism) at Harvard University, to UBC on March 21, 17:30 in Room 120 of the Choi Building. Matsuo san is an Asahi Shimbun Journalist who previously worked as the Chief Correspondent for the Ministry of Environment and former Geneva Bureau Chief and non-resident Moscow Correspondent of The Asahi Shimbun. Matsuo san will be sharing some insider stories of the LDP, having travelled extensively with Shinjiro Koizumi, and exploring Japan's climate policies under the Abe administration. Professor Yves Tiberghien’s paper on “Kishida’s Climate Policy and Opportunities for U.S.-Japan Cooperation” ties closely with Matsuo san’s visit to UBC, where Matsuo-san will further expand on the key players in the acceleration of Japan’s climate policies and the insider story.

Speaker:

Ichiro Matsuo, a Fulbright scholar (Journalism) and Staff Writer for The Asahi Shimbun (on sabbatical). As a reporter at Asahi Shimbun, he has served in the Geneva bureau at the UN Geneva Office as the bureau’s chief and a non-resident Moscow correspondent (mainly in charge of Ukraine) (2014-2018), in addition to acting as a chief correspondent in the Ministry of Environment, Japan (2019-2020). In Tokyo, Mr. Matsuo has experienced multiple press clubs (記者クラブ)including the Ministry of Environment (MOE), Japan Meteorological Agency and the Ministry of Education Culture, Sports, Science and Technology since 2009. He was in the pool of the Minister of the Environment (Shinjiro KOIZUMI) at UNFCCC COP25 in Madrid and the UN General Assembly in 2019. In Hokkaido, he was chief of Asahi’s press corps in the Hokkaido Government Press Club (北海道庁記者クラブ). He has covered the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (自民党), especially in the context of local politics since 2005. He has also extensively covered multilateral negotiations including arms control treaties Including the NPT and the TPNW in addition to environmental treaties such as the UNFCCC within the UN setting. During the 2022-23 academic year, Mr. Matsuo’s research at US-JP Program at Harvard University will examine the outcome of the US-Russo “Megatons to Megawatts Program,” which converted highly enriched uranium from Soviet-made nukes into nuclear fuels for civil nuclear power reactors. He received M.S. in Forestry from University of British Columbia (2002), Graduate Diploma in Science in natural resources management from Australian National University (2000), and B.A. (Russian Studies) from Osaka University of Foreign Studies (today’s Osaka University. 1999). He was an exchange student at Ural State University (today’s Ural Federal University, 1997-98). His research for M.S. was supported by Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Foundation (司馬遼太郎記念財団)
