Co-hosted by the Manitoba Historical Society and CBC Radio host Gordon Goldsborough, this 2-day event* is essentially a fun 'experience' where our focus will be drawn to the mystery, sense of loss, and unexpected beauty found in abandoned iconic structures.

Grain elevators, homes, churches (including epic Ukrainian onion-dome churches), mills, bridges, storefronts, old vehicles, abandoned movie sets, fantastic farmsteads, factories, ghost towns, vast landscapes... where do you even begin!

Think of this experience as a opportunity to learn from a master photographer. At each location, we'll discuss how to handle a number of generic situations you'll encounter while developing a natural eye towards making expressive images. A field class as much about how to find and approach different subjects as about camera settings. The objective for you to gain a critical foothold on how to analyze a scene.

Observation in this sense is extraordinarily vital. It not only allows us to feel an intimate human connection with the people immediately before us but also begs us to think about where we are going next. Scouting with our eyes and cameras, we'll examine the layers organizing the elements of a vast space to create scale and graphic interest. Taking a closer look, we'll observe hundreds of vignettes, whereupon the vignette provides a closer and more intimate focus, serving to isolate visually revealing segments of the scene. In no time, you will have a compelling collection of stunning and melancholy images -- granting permanence to historic structures that will soon vanish forever.

Advice is based on the instructor's experience in the field, having been at many of these locations several times and under different lighting conditions. For the majority of locations, we have permissions from the landowners, where, they have welcomed us on-site to briefly talk about the property's legacy. For new finds, where we do not have permission, we shall shoot from the right of way.

So where should you start and what should you do? The fact that you're reading this right now is your key to making the photos you've always hoped for. So congratulations. It's time to register.
