Event description

Description

Join us for an introduction to herbal medicine and ecological gardening as we explore a variety of easy to grow medicinal plants.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • The ecological function and growing preferences of medicinal plants
  • Folklore around specific plants
  • Practical medicinal uses

You will take home your own medicinal tincture too!

This workshop will be located at the Fernwood Community Centre and Spring Ridge Commons. Please dress for the weather—this course has an outdoor portion.

Community Supported Education:

In every workshop, 2 spaces are available for youth and members of our community who are not able to afford tuition, in an attempt to remove barriers and make this information available for all. If you are interested in making a donation to sponsor a space, please contact Jenna at 250-381-1552 x100 or info@fernwodnrg.ca. All donations go directly toward providing workshop spaces for those who cannot afford to access workshops.

Meet the instructors:

This workshop is co-hosted with Vanessa Prescott, an Island-based Clinical Herbal Therapist with an easy-going approach to Herbal Medicine. Her aim is to empower people to take their health into their own hands and to show people the effectiveness of plants as medicine, strengthening Herbal Medicine’s credibility.

Matt Gravel is a Victoria-based permaculturalist with a passion for sustainable and living systems. After 10 years of property maintenance and conventional landscaping, he became tired of the unsustainable and non-regenerative practices commonly used in urban environments and wanted to find a way to change these urban spaces.

He has been studying permaculture since 2012. He completed his Permaculture Design Certificate through Gaia Craft & Langara College in Vancouver, BC and his Advanced Permaculture Design Certification at the Bullock’s Permaculture Homestead on Orcas Island, WA. Currently, he is working towards a diploma in permaculture education through the Permaculture Institute.

Gravel operates a nursery, design, and education businessPlant Buoy: Life Preservation Plants. He is thrilled to be teaching people about low maintenance, easy to manage systems that grow nutrient dense food and medicine while regenerating urban landscapes.

This workshop series is brought to you by Fernwood NRG & Plant Buoy: Life Preservation Plants. We strive to increase healthy food access and develop food skills in our neighbourhood.
