Event description

Description

The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board is hosting a training session for volunteers who are, or will be, supporting English Language Learners (newcomer students) through the Ottawa Volunteers in Education program.

This English Language Learning (ELL) workshop will help you support newcomer students using various strategies. OCDSB ELL Consultants will be teaching best practices for working with ELL students. ELL support is for newcomer students that have recently arrived but due to various factors have not yet developed the age-appropriate literacy skills in their first language. These students need support in both language acquisition and academic upgrading.

NOTE: All trained volunteers must commit to volunteering weekly for 2-3 hours for at least one school term (until April* or June and ideally return in September), collaborate with the educator to support students learning English, and complete an impact evaluation survey at the end of each term.

*Post-secondary students who live out of town can volunteer until the end of their semester.

NOTE: if you have not received your Police Background Clearance prior to the workshop date, you can attend the workshop but will not be allowed to volunteer until you have met all requirements of the screening process.

Registration on Eventbrite is required.

Parking is available in the McNabb Community Centre lot or on the street.
