Event Details

Join the Alberta Magazine Publishers Association on Friday, Nov. 22 (Calgary) – for the seminar “Human Resources for Small and Mid-Sized Magazines” with Jenn Farrell, former managing editor of subTerrain magazine. [Please note that the Edmonton seminar on Thursday, Nov. 21 has been cancelled]

Small and mid-sized magazines are frequently bare-bones operations with limited (or no) full-time staff. To compete and thrive, publishers and managing editors often rely on the contributions of part-timers, interns, practicum students, year-round volunteers, or some combination thereof. Without a big manual of best practices, an HR department, or direct management experience, publishers can find themselves working without a net when it comes to hiring, rewarding and retaining “good help.”

In this session, Farrell will explore ways to put a little HR department into your day-to-day operation, and to avoid miscommunications, attrition, and thumb-twiddling before they happen.

Topics include:

  • Determining your needs and desired outcomes from junior staff
  • Creating effective and fast interviewing, hiring, and training processes
  • Offering feedback without micro-managing
  • Defining expectations for work hours and performance
  • Rewarding and motivating employees and volunteers beyond money

Farrell will also present input gathered from junior staff themselves, who share:

  • Why they work in small to mid-sized magazines and what they want out of the experience
  • How they best learn and apply on-the-job skills
  • What motivates them—and what doesn’t

Be prepared for a lively discussion and plenty of useful tips to make your magazine’s team united, organized, and effective!

Jenn Farrell is a freelance writer and editor, the former managing editor of subTerrain magazine, and Board Past-President for the Magazine Association of BC. Her work has appeared in many publications, including Prism, West Coast LineEvent, Real Weddings, and Alive. As the author of two collections of short fiction: The Devil You Know (Anvil Press, 2010), and Sugar Bush & Other Stories (Anvil, 2006), she’s proud that Vancouver’s Georgia Straight once called her “a bad-ass version of Alice Munro.”
