Event description

Description

Hastings Crossing BIA's Safety Committee has been hard at work developing ways to make our community safer in light of city-wide challenges with crime and the overdose crisis. As part of the ongoing safety efforts provided to our members, we are hosting ongoing de-escalation and training for HxBIA businesses. This training will be accompanied with an optional naloxone and safe needle disposal training as well.

At this training, you will learn:

  • How to communicate and calmly de-escalate situations with unruly guests in your business
  • Learn how personal space, body language, and listening skills can help effectively de-escalate the disruptive behaviour
  • Learn some measures to prevent escalation situations in your business
  • How to safely administer naloxone to someone experiencing an overdose
  • How to safely dispose of used needles and drug paraphernalia.

Participants will leave with knowledge and procedures in the above skills, a take-home naloxone kit, and a new HxBIA safety and info poster for employees.

This training is open to HxBIA members, with preference to business employees.

De-escalation training will be provided by Mission Possible. Naloxone and safe needle disposal training will be provided by Karmik.

We intend to make this training available on a regular basis so that new businesses and new employees can add this to their welcome and orientation routines.

We have added a $5 charge for the tickets to ensure participant attendance. The charge will go to support the work of Mission Possible.
