Workshop Descriptions and Presenter Bios

Making Meaning- A harm reduction approach to Non-Suicidal Self Harm. Rosalie Fralick- Foundry Victoria

Using explanation and small group exercises, the workshop will help providers to understand motivations of self-harm, apply harm-reduction frameworks, and support youth in building a sense of meaningful living even while engaging in self-harm.

Rosalie has worked with youth in schools, community centres, residential care, hospitals and as an outreach counsellor. Her work is grounded in lived experiences , a formal education in psychology, and a firm belief in the resiliency of youth. She believes strongly that trauma informed work must centre the trauma of social injustice and that healing though neither linear nor easy to define, is possible.

Tools for Facilitation: Adapting Your Practice to Meet Participant Needs - Jason Oliver - Power To Be

This workshop will discuss various possible audiences for your practice, and help you decide which facilitation methods to utilize to deepen your impact. Learn to leverage your personal style for successful facilitation of positive participant outcomes, and expand your toolbox. Come prepared to experiment with different techniques to grow your practice during this interactive workshop.

Jason enjoys helping people make positive changes in their lives, and believes individuals can overcome any barrier by asking and answering the right questions. With nearly two decades of experience as an educator, adaptive wilderness guide, and coach, Jason uses the motto of “we’ll figure it out…together” to guide his process. He recently completed his Master’s in Organizational Leadership, including a capstone project related to emotional intelligence. Jason believes strongly in the power of nature and human-powered recreation to change lives, and enjoys exploring the world with his family.

Pathways of Care for Gender-Diverse Youth. Lux Welsh - Trans Care BC

This is an opportunity for youth workers to get some hands-on experience navigating pathways of care for Two-Spirit, trans, non-binary and otherwise gender-diverse youth. Learn more about how youth navigate care systems to get access to hormones, gender-affirming surgery and more! We will also be touching on some other common processes that gender-diverse youth often experience, such as legal name and gender-marker change, accessing gender-affirming resources, etc. Participants can also look forward to a facilitated conversation about community resources for gender-diverse youth in Victoria, as well as the ways our individual agencies can support these amazing young people!

Lux is a member of the Trans Care BC Peer and Community support team. They work in partnership with Foundry Victoria to deliver peer support and systems navigation assistance to Two-Spirit, trans and non-binary clients of the Victoria Youth Clinic. They also work closely with other youth agencies in town that provide amazing service to LGBTQ2+ young people in our community. Lux is excited to meet with reps from other agencies in town to learn more about how we can all work together to better support youth going through transitions of all kinds!
