Webinar Overview

This webinar will provide an overview of how to provide hypertension care during this pandemic. Dr. Thompson will describe her experience in virtual hypertension care at the University of Alberta Hypertension Clinic. Ways to optimize data gathering will be discussed, including technology options for patients to track their BP. Home BP monitor selection and proper use will be reviewed, as well as resources on the Hypertension Canada website to support patient management.

1. Outline how hypertension care is provided virtually in a Hypertension Clinic.

2. Describe how to select an appropriate home BP device and check accuracy/validity.

3. Review resources from Hypertension Canada that support education of patients

Clinical Associate Professor, and Director, Experiential Education, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB

Ann Thompson is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Experiential Education at the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB. For over a decade, Ann has practiced clinically at the University of Alberta Hypertension Clinic at Kaye Edmonton Clinic. Ann is a prescribing pharmacist who works collaboratively with internists and nurses to provide care to patients with hypertension. She also teaches hypertension and blood pressure measurement to students, residents, practicing pharmacists and primary care network health care professionals.

Dr. Bell is a family physician and clinical researcher in Toronto, Canada. He is Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of Toronto. He is a recipient of the Canadian College of Family Physicians Award of Excellence.

His activities include:

• Primary Panel and Past Chair – Canadian Cardiovascular Society Antiplatelet Guideline Committee.

• Primary Panel – Canadian Cardiovascular Society Atrial Fibrillation Guideline Committee

• Thrombosis Canada – Board of Directors and Vice President

• Hypertension Canada – Board of Directors and Co-chair of Education and Implementation

Dr. Bell is the only primary care physician to chair a CCS guideline committee. His involvement in continuing medical education includes the development and presentation of many national projects. He has served as faculty and chair of countless committees and advisory boards dedicated to serving the common interests of the medical profession and the public. His research, commentaries and letters have been presented and published internationally.
