Event description
Camp Fire Canoe Party

About this Event

Urban voyageurs, come join a truly unique iconic camp fire party overlooking the Parliament Buildings. From the Ottawa New Edinburgh Club, we paddle in large stable canoes 4 kms past Rideau Falls and various sites to Lone Pine Island, in the middle of the Ottawa River. There we will lay out a potluck meal, build a camp fire, and enjoy a Fall evening surrounded by the light of the stars and our spectacular Capital City. This is a truly unique quintessential Canadian moment you will never forget, every time you look at maps and photos of that little island at the foot of Parliament Hill.

This is a potluck, so bring what you want to share for dinner time including refreshments. If you would rather bring food for yourself alone, that is fine too. BYOB / wine for around the fire. Feel free to bring a folding chair or sit on the rocks.

We gather at 2:30 pm for an evening paddle along this stretch of our Heritage Waterway. We aim to return by 9:30 pm.

Payment: $20 on the day of the event.

*Paddles and lifejackets are included, however, you are welcome to bring your own if you prefer.

Things to bring:

- food to share

- flashlight / headlamp

- video/camera & tripod (for night shots, you need stability)

- folding chair for sitting by island camp fire

- blanket

- potluck portion / snacks and water / juice / wine / beer

- warm jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves

- rain gear (if weather forecast warrants)

- water shoes

- change of clothes (just in case it rains or weather changes)

- dry bag or double garbage bags for storing clothes.

About the leader:

John Gaudaur Savage is a Metis, with voyageur and ancestors on both sides of the family, including Antoine Gaudaur and Chief Big Shilling who both fought to defend the borders of Canada by canoe in the War of 1812. He has led local canoe and rowing trips on the Ottawa and Gatineau Rivers for the past decade. He is willing to share his knowledge of local history and the local environment.

** All participants agree to assume personal risk, as ALL outdoors activities come with a measure of risk. Even so, everything is risk in life and no one gets out alive. Enjoy your life and come paddling! Beginners welcome. **
