CYBER SECURITY SPECIALIST

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role you will:

• Conduct penetration tests, web application assessments and network vulnerability assessments of environments or applications related to the OPS province-wide I&IT infrastructure and information resources.
• Prepare formal assessment reports, briefing notes, memos and summaries for senior management.
• Provide technical expertise, training and advisory services in vulnerability management and information systems security.
• Develop and maintain team consultative processes with branch colleagues to develop collaborative efforts on penetration testing and remediation to improve security posture.

How do I qualify?

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SECURITY KNOWLEDGE:

• You have experience in identifying, analyzing and exploiting common vulnerabilities contained in web applications, using both manual techniques and automated tools appropriate for enterprise use.
• You have experience with vulnerability assessment methodologies, tools and techniques used to conduct network vulnerability assessments and penetration testing.
• You have demonstrated experience in leading vulnerability assessments in a large environment with diverse systems and of common attacks, common web application vulnerabilities, exploits and best practices for remediation.
• You have knowledge of IT security methodologies, tools, techniques, security design and architecture, threat/risk concepts and practices, and encryption technologies.
• You have the ability to acquire and interpret corporate I&IT security strategy, programs, the government's trust model, and privacy legislation.

COMMUNICATION AND RELATIONSHIP BUILDING SKILLS:

• You have oral and written communication, mediation, negotiation, consultative and advisory skills.
• You have experience with writing reports aimed at both the executive/non-technical management level and technical analyst level.
• You have skills to provide training in the use of commercial security assessment tools and scanners.
• Your stakeholder management, partnership and relationship building skills allow you to initiate and nurture strong working relationships with internal and external colleagues.

TECHNICAL EXPERTISE:

• You have working experience with a variety of operating systems, programming and scripting languages, platforms, and both common and obscure network services and protocols.
• You have an understanding of emerging I&IT trends, best practices and developments in common attacks, common web application vulnerabilities, exploits and best practices for remediation.

ANALYTICAL AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS:

• You have demonstrable analytical and problem solving skills to determine alternative and innovative solutions where guidelines or policies exist but may not address new and emerging I&IT trends.
• You can conceptualize, interpret and evaluate security exposures across multiple domains.

Please note this is a 5.5 month contract with the possibility of extension.


SECURITY SPECIALIST

The Cyber Security Operations team in Cyber Security, Treasury Board Secretariat, Government of Ontario is a carefully assembled group of passionate and diverse individuals. The team proudly believes in our mission to protect the Ontario Government, public services and clients from a diversity of cyber threats. We are looking for a cyber security specialist with an in-depth understanding of existing security tools and applied practices.

This is a technical and creative role, for a person who is enjoying being methodical in exploring new opportunities. Along with strong technology acumen and keen analytical skills, you'll have the ability to think strategically and creatively, with the capacity to push conventional boundaries, aiming to deliver best in class cyber protection services.

The position operates in a 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year environment.

What can I expect to do in this role?

As a Cyber Security Specialist, you will:

• Provide technical expertise in the monitoring of newly discovered threats and attacks
• Lead a range of highly specialized and complex security initiatives, including enhanced monitoring, threat intelligence, and threat hunting
• Conduct and/or lead the research, analysis, and evaluation of leading-edge cyber defense methods/technologies
• Provide technical expertise, consultation, and training in areas of incident response and advanced threat monitoring, to the team members and customers
• Provide technical expertise in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of corporate security operating procedures, standards and best practices

How do I qualify?

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• you have proven hands-on experience in the information security field, including risk management, security engineering, security monitoring, or incident response
• you have demonstrated interest in open-search research, as well as practical knowledge using open source tools for Incident Response and Threat Intelligence
• you have the ability to continuously analyze and correlate incidents artifacts to discover new attack techniques, tool used, and footprint
• you have proven hands-on experience in administering *nix and Windows systems or Security technologies like IPS; SIEM; Malware Protection and others
• you have practical experience in differentiating between deferent types of cyber attacks and threat agents and ability to formulate sound defense mitigations

COMMUNICATION AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:

• you can provide specialized expert advice to clients on security issues and make presentations to senior management
• you can document technical findings, develop incident response remediation recommendations, and present both oral and written reports to clients

ANALYTICAL AND PROBLEM SOLVING SKILLS:

• you have demonstrable problem-solving and analytical skills to resolve highly technical issues with critical impact on the functioning of the OPS
• you can communicate technical details in a clear manner and have the ability to manage multiple assignments

LEADERSHIP SKILLS:

• you have project leadership and technical expertise in the development, implementation and communication of cyber security systems, processes and services
