IEEE Young Professionals, IEEE Women in Engineering, and the PMI Canadian West Coast Chapter are proud to present Project Management Series*!

The series will include three workshops:

  • Tuesday, March 7, 2017 (6:00 PM - 7:30 PM)
    • General Project Management: Basics of Project Management for Young Professionals (particularly engineers). This workshop will cover the application process as well as working effectively under a Project Manager.  
    • Key questions addressed:
      • What is a Project Manager?
      • How do you become a Project Manager?
      • How to work effectively with a Project Manager?

Speaker: 

Scott Crowe
  • Scott Crowe: Scott a Project Manager with SNC-Lavalin. Following his graduation from Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, Scott has attended BCIT and completed a Bachelor of Technology in Construction Management. In addition to his Project Management Professional certificate, Scott is registered with the Canadian Institute of Quantity Surveyors, Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering and Chartered Institute of Building. 

 

  • Wednesday, April 5, 2017 (6:30 PM - 8:00 PM)
    • Communication and Coordination: Focused on coordination and communication in projects. The workshop will consist of a short presentation by a panel of experts from various Project Management fields, and a question and answer session.  
    • Key questions addressed:
      • Effectively managing an interdisciplinary team
      • Effectively executing a project
      • Effectively running meetings
      • Communications with all stakeholders (clients, subcontractors, and vendors)

Speaker: 

Marie
  • Marie Chiasson: Ms. Chiasson has worked for Consulting Engineers since 1985. She joined BBA in 1999, where she provides expertise in several spheres of engineering activities. She became one of the firm’s partners in 2003. As study engineer, project engineer and project manager, she has acquired extensive experience in studies, detailed engineering and project management.
    Since 2015, she is responsible for the Project Management practice in BBA which means that she is responsible to develop and implement process, procedures and tools regarding project management and she nominates, trains and coaches new project managers in the firm. BBA is a pan Canadian Engineering firm counting on 135 Project Managers.
Peter
  • Peter Helland: Peter Helland is a professional engineer and the Chief Executive Officer of Midgard Consulting Incorporated which does work for groups such as BC Hydro, the National Energy Board, Yukon Energy, and the Ontario Energy Board.
    Peter holds a Master of Business Administration from the Sauder School of Business and a Master of Applied Science in Systems Engineering. Throughout his career he has worked in engineering, project management and leadership roles across a variety of industries including electricity, oil & gas, military, telecommunications and social services.
Nick
  • Nick Hawley: Nick Hawley has 34 years of experience in heavy industry, which included 26 years in the hydropower industry. He has managed and coordinated multidisciplinary teams of engineers in both operational and project roles. He is a licensed engineer with PMP certification and was recently elected to Fellow in the IMechE based on review of his work in the profession. As the senior Operations and Maintenance manager for 19 of BC Hydro’s power stations he had overall responsibility for the investment, planning and implementation of plant maintenance and emergency response. He has been a company director and is currently director of two non-profit organizations. In addition to Canada Nick has worked in the UK and New Zealand.
   
  • Tuesday, May 9, 2017 (6:00 PM - 7:30 PM)
    • Finances: The topic of this presentation is financing and budgeting. The event will provide information about setting and controlling a budget, as well as addressing budget overruns. 
    • Key questions addressed:
      • How to set a budget
      • How to control a budget
      • How to ask client for more money
      • How to manage an overrun project
      • How to plan a contingency

Speaker: 

  • Michael Walsh is Principal & International Managing Partner with Midgard Consulting Inc. Mr. Walsh is an economist and has been in the energy business since 1996. He has built First Nations project partnerships, shaped regulatory & electric industry policy, and participated in numerous generation asset acquisitions. Mr. Walsh has delivered economic studies across a range of energy related fields including natural gas price forecasts, electricity price forecasts, transmission cost forecasts, and construction cost forecasts to utility, government and industrial clients. In addition to his financial knowledge, Mr. Walsh extensive experience includes project management and team management. Mr. Walsh holds a Master of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University and a Bachelor in Economics from the University of Ottawa.  
Tomas
  • Tomas Reyes:Tomas has over 25 years’ experience in business, consulting and program/project management. He is the Program Manager for Community Partnerships and Integration at Doctors of BC. Tomas' background is in Business Administration, and holds a Bachelor's degree from Tecnológico de Monterrey. Tomas is a Certified PROSCI Change Management Consultant, and specializes in Management and implementation of large complex initiatives, strategy development and implementation; and Operations, financial and sales/service management. His volunteer experience includes being President of the Board for the Langley's International Festival Society, organization he has supported since 2009 and Elected Community Representative and Advisor of the Institute of Mexicans Abroad between 2009 and 2011.

 

Each presentation will be followed by a Q&A session and open networking.
