About this Event

Stories where choice and chance alter and shape the traveller's journey.

Featuring Sarah Abusarar, Chirine El Ansary, Mariella Bertelli, Stina Fagertun, David Francis, and Dan Yashinsky

Music by Jaron Freeman-Fox

Directed by Mariella Bertelli

Sarah Abusarar comes from a long line of storytellers on her paternal side. She tells stories to both adults and children. Sarah has told both nationally and internationally at various cultural centres, museums, art galleries, festivals, libraries, parks. and homes. Because Sarah grew up in several countries, she tells stories from all over the world, with the focus on Palestinian and Croatian stories, where her roots lie. Her favorite stories are ones that promote social change. Sarah has also used stories in a therapeutic way with children in refugee camps, as well as with refugee children in Toronto, as part of their therapy. She also teaches stories at the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program. Sarah tells stories so that she might go deep inside the tales and find herself in far away magical places that she remembers from long, long ago.

Chirine El Ansary is Cairo born, and grew up between Egypt and France. She is dedicated to story-performing with a deep interest in how words, voice, and movement merge to create atmospheres, generate emotions, and convey precise images. From 1995 to 2004 she performed mainly in ancient buildings in the old city of Cairo and in the streets, markets, old palaces of Tunis, Damascus, Asilah, Taza, and Aleppo. Since then she has been performing internationally at festivals, in prisons, Palestinian refugee camps, remote mountain villages, train stations, and forests. Chirine has been researching the anonymous and universal masterpiece One Thousand and One Nights since 1993.

A versatile storyteller, Mariella Bertelli believes in the power of stories to transform and inspire. She loves working with other storytellers, bringing together different voices to create ensemble shows.

Storyteller and singer/songwriter Stina Fagertun was born and raised in Tromsø, Norway. With her rich ancestry of Norwegian, Kven, and Coastal Sámi storytelling traditions, she has been a cultural ambassador for more than 30 years. She won Best Storyteller at the Norwegian Storytelling Festival in 2010 and has been a guest storyteller at the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, at Nunavut Sivuniksavut school in Ottawa, and around the world. Stina celebrates with spoken word and song, Arctic folksongs and traditional "joiks.” She tells of the magical landscape of the land of the Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun. Stina takes listeners to the shores of the Arctic Ocean to join the Sami reindeer herders for fantastical stories ranging between land and sea, traditional and contemporary.

David Francis is a songwriter, lyricist, storyteller, and guitarist from Scotland, with a number of performance pieces and recordings to his credit. In a parallel life, he is a ‘folk bureaucrat’, serving as Director of Traditional Arts and Culture Scotland, which promotes knowledge of, access to, and the practice of traditional music, dance, and storytelling. He has performed in settings from the Kennedy Center to village halls (although probably prefers the latter).

Dan Yashinsky is a Toronto-based storyteller, writer, and community animator. He is the author of Suddenly They Heard Footsteps and Swimming with Chaucer. He founded the Toronto Storytelling Festival in l979.

Steeped in study under the great folk musicians of India, Scandinavia, Siberia, and Bulgaria, Jaron Freeman-Fox unravels these traditions, and weaves them through the 12 strings of his Viol D'Amore.
