Ignorance is no excuse:

Don’t be an accidental plagiarist

Presented by: Dr. Cheryl Kier

Date: Wednesday, November 7, 2018

Time: 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. (MST)

Abstract:

Coming from a perspective that much plagiarism is accidental, this presentation aims to help students recognize common errors. Using examples from her research and from real life events, Dr. Kier will illustrate patterns and techniques for students to use to avoid plagiarism in their papers. The importance of avoiding plagiarism and the use of plagiarism detection software will also be discussed. There will also be time for students to ask their own questions.

Dr. Cheryl Kier has been a tutor and then a full time faculty member at Athabasca University since 1999. She is an associate professor of psychology in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. While she teaches and conducts research in the area of families, child development, and adolescent psychology, she also studies student success, particularly accidental plagiarism.

The Adobe Connect link will be sent out to all registered participants the day before the presentation.
