Event description

Teaching Kitchens: Next Steps in Policy and Sustainability

Towards understanding the effects of nutrition in poorly resourced settings on literacy, learning and attention skills

A one day participatory Impact Acceleration Workshop by NNEdPro, Cambridge University, RCSG and ESRC will be held in Kolkata (West Bengal, India) bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders from Health, Government, Academia, NGOs, and other key influencers with the aim of strengthening dialogues in the fields of education and nutrition with the purpose of ending malnutrition TOGETHER BY 2025.

Background Information

The NNEdPro Global Centre for Nutrition and Health is an award winning, international and interdisciplinary ‘think-tank’ anchored in Cambridge (UK).

Our motto is ‘Advancing and Implementing Nutrition Knowledge to Improve Health, Wellbeing and Society.’

In 2015, NNEdPro disseminated medical nutrition education to over 200 doctors and dietitians at the World Congress of Public Health, Kolkata. The concept of the Health Promotion Teaching Kitchen project was developed to address the issues around hunger, growth stunting and low academic achievement.

The role of nutrition and nutrition education is an under addressed but central concern in the educational hegemony that compounds key problems in poorly resourced settings including challenges to health outcomes as well as learning and cognitive development.

While there is a concurrent understanding about the effects of poor nutrition on children’s growth and development, and its impact on cognitive and learning skills there is an evident gap linking these two areas of evidence-based knowledge and understanding. Critical to furthering impact, there will be discussions around food, faith and the role of the stakeholders present in the Teaching Kitchen project going forward, with the aim of shaping the future together.

During the workshop the group will explore the role of nutrition in children’s growth and development, cognitive skills, and learning abilities. The organisers will also disseminate data and share knowledge from existing work on projects as per:

  • Alignment with UN Decade of Action of Nutrition 2025.
  • NELICO India (Nutrition Education and Leadership for Improved Clinical/Public Health Outcomes).
  • Urban slum dwellers project & Next Steps.
