Event description

Description

Globally 5.6 million children die before they reach their fifth birthday, 2.5 million in the first month of life and 2.8 million in sub-Saharan Africa alone. It is estimated that 300, 000 women die during and following pregnancy and childbirth.

Almost all of these deaths occur in low-resource settings and most can be prevented. The Sustainable Development Goals have set ambitious targets to reduce these mortality rates by more than 50% by 2030.

Innovations in technology, health systems, financing and society have an enormous potential to reduce both maternal, newborn and child mortality.

The vision of the meeting is to push for change and innovative solutions to some of the world's greatest health challenges. We are bringing together global leaders in maternal and child health including researchers, funders, policy makers, and other stakeholders to discuss, network and plan for moving the agenda forward. The sessions will feature key leaders involved in the implementation and evaluation of promising innovations in the African context.

The objective is to drive implementation of innovations for impact in reducing mortality in mothers and babies in low to middle income countries (LMICs)

Cross cutting themes of the meeting:

  • Bridging the maternal-newborn divide

  • Prototype to product: how to ensure quality and safety

  • Innovative financing

  • The science of implementation

  • Human resources and task-sharing

  • From policy to practice

  • Gender issues in maternal, newborn and child health innovating

This meeting is sponsored by the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies, the Innovating for Maternal and Child Health in Africa (IMCHA) initiative and the Centre for International Child Health. It will be held at the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS) November 18-20, 2019.
