David Segal, MA, RCC, CSTP | Nature based therapy: An introduction to the possibilities of partnering with nature for both people and planet
Counselling Psychology Student Association
From Dave: Hi everyone, I have been involved in facilitating outdoor group processes since I was a young teenager thrown into guiding canoe trips for youth in Algonquin Park north of Toronto. The transformative power of being attuned to the rhythms of nature, dropping into my senses, and being a part of a supportive and accepting group had and continues to be a central part of my practice as a clinical counsellor in Victoria BC. I spent my undergraduate studying psychology and environmental studies and followed that with a MA in Child and Youth Care, specializing in Nature and Adventure Therapy. My learning journey as a registered clinical counsellor offering nature-based therapy has included numerous teachers, from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, and includes many more than human ones. My current focus is on how an understanding of ancient wisdom, neuroscience, nature connection and somatic practices can help to facilitate transformative experiences at the individual, interpersonal and collective level. We certainly are living in times of radical change where nature connection work is needed more than ever!
Only for those interested, here is a list of some of my teachers: Joanna Macy, David Abrams, Bill Plotkin, the Wilderness Awareness School, Vikki Reynolds, Alan Wade, Cathy Richardson, and Linda Coates (Response-based practice), Stephen Madigan, David Epstein (Narrative therapy), Sue Johnson and Gail Palmer (Emotion Focused Couple and Family Therapy), Shauna Janz, Robert Neimeyer and Frances Weller (Grief and Loss specialists), Duncan Taylor and Hilary Leighton (Systems theory and Depth Psychology), Irvin Yalom (Existential and Group therapy) and most recently Sharon Stanley assisting with her Somatic Transformation course (Relational body centered practices for healing trauma). I am really looking forward to meeting you all!
