Event description
An evening full of connection and discussion - Ottawa premiere of "In the Footsteps of our Ancestors" followed by Q&A with the Filmmakers

About this Event

Filmed on the traditional territory of the Shúhtagot’ı̨nę, In the Footsteps of our Ancestors is a powerful documentary that explores the traditional, historic, and contemporary use of one of Canada's best kept secrets: the Canol Heritage Trail. Presented by Trails in Tandem (Nicholas Castel, Erinn Drage, Jordan Lennie), this captivating and enriching documentary follows the experiences of youth hikers on the 2017 Canol Youth Leadership Hike who face some of the Northwest Territory's most beautiful and unforgiving wilderness. Together, the participants brave the dramatic Dodo Canyon, the racing Doi T'oh river, and the thick mountain lowlands leading to the mighty Mackenzie River.

Join us in Ottawa to retrace the footsteps of ancestral Sahtú Dene and Métis and World War II soldiers in an epic film about what it means to be chosen by the mountains and guided by the teachings of the land. In attendance will be Executive Producer Norman Yakeleya, Dene National Chief, the Students on Ice Foundation, soundtrack musician Sheehan Jordan, presenting partner Canoe North Adventures and CCUNESCO.
