Description

Indie Films Fernie (IFF) screens independent films at the Vogue Theatre on the first Sunday of every month from September – April at 5pm. Read more about IFF here.

  • Sunday 7th January 5pm, The Other Side of Hope: Khaled, syrian refugee stows away on a freighter to Helsinki. Meanwhile, Wikström is a traveling salesman who wins big at a poker table and buys himself a restaurant with the proceeds. When the authorities turn down his application for asylum, Khaled is forced underground and Wikström finds him sleeping in the yard behind his restaurant. He offers him a job and a roof over his head and, for a while, they form a utopian union with the restaurant’s waitress, the chef and his dog.
  • Sunday 4th of February 5pm, Porcupine Lake: Somewhere between Toronto and northern Ontario, between childhood and adolescence, 13-year-old Bea (Charlotte Salisbury) is facing down growing-up, and isn’t sure she likes what she sees, especially with her parents on the edge of divorce. Then she meets Kate (Lucinda Armstrong Hall), she is funny, outspoken and tough. Under Kate’s influence, Bea finds her courage. But being brave has a price, especially when it means making a difficult choice between “never squealing” or speaking out.
  • Sunday 4th of March 5pm, Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story: Austrian actress Hedy Lamarr fled an oppressive marriage to create a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s top leading ladies in the 1940s. Behind the glamour and sex appeal, though, was a talented and inquisitive inventor who created a radio system that is now considered the basis of Bluetooth technology.
  • Sunday 8th April 5pm, Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool: Once a Hollywood star, Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening) is now doing theatre in the UK. When she collapses one night, she calls an old flame (Jamie Bell) and asks him to take her to his family home in Liverpool. As she gets sicker, he remembers the romance they had that changed both their lives.

Individually, films cost $9 for members or $10 for non-members (of the Arts Station). You can buy a 4-film festival pass for $32 for non-members or $28 for members, saving up to $8.
