Event description

Description

We are excited to announce that this year’s Indigenous Children’s Health Symposium will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

The McMaster Medicine Indigenous Health Interest Group is excited to facilitate the 6th annual Indigenous Children’s Health Symposium (ICHS). The event aims to connect students and community members to Canadian leaders in issues of Indigenous child health in Canada.

ICHS 2018 will take place September 8th, 2018 at McMaster’s Innovation Park in Hamilton, Ontario.

Children and youth make up over 48 percent of the Indigenous population in Canada. This is compared to 31 percent in the non-Indigenous population of Canada. In Hamilton, Indigenous people make up approximately 3.1% of the population with one third being children. The Indigenous population is young and growing, making the health and development of these children important to understand and support.

In the post-residential school era, Indigenous youth are emerging as future leaders in Canada as communities attempt to reclaim their heritage despite persistent and large gaps in major child health status indicators. Indigenous children and youth lag behind non-Indigenous Canadians in infant mortality, educational attainment, access to health care, poverty, as well as overall mortality and morbidity from preventable causes such as diabetes, tuberculosis, fetal alcohol spectrum disorder and suicide. Much of this discrepancy can be attributed to the inter-generational Canadian policies of dislocating children from their families and communities, which have perpetuated health and socioeconomic disparities over many decades.

As a result, action on Indigenous children’s health has not only a moral imperative, but social and economic value as well. Over the past years, ICHS has been a space where these conversations can begin to happen through the exchange of information between students, faculty, and community members. We are eager to bring the sixth iteration of this conference to the McMaster and Hamilton community and anticipate the ideas and momentum for advancements in Indigenous children’s health that will be generated from this event.

More details regarding the 2018 symposium will be released in the coming months. In the meantime, please feel free to peruse this website to check out the exciting speakers and workshops from last year’s ICHS.
