Indigenous Cultural Competency Training day hosted by the Waterloo Wellington LHIN for Health Service Providers and Community System Partners provided by the Ontario Federation of Indigenous Friendship Centres (OFIFCs)

Indigenous Cultural Competency is an ongoing cycle of learning, a continuum. The intent of the WWLHIN initiative for this Indigenous Cultural Competency session is to provide a general overview of the most relevant information needed to better serve and support Indigenous peoples across all sectors and organizational levels in Waterloo Wellington. From clinicians, front-line care providers, support staff to system leaders, the session lays the foundation needed to begin the work of establishing meaningful relationships with Indigenous peoples and creating culturally safe environments throughout the region.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will learn about the early relationship in Canada with Indigenous people, intergenerational trauma and an introduction to the OFIFC’s relationship framework. Learning can then focus on answering “what are my responsibilities?” This journey strengthens cultural awareness, informs relationship building and enhances organizational programs and policies.

• Examine how Indigenous/non-Indigenous relationships have been impacted by historical events and how the relationship can be re-framed today;
• Introduced to policies and legislations that have impacted Indigenous communities; and
• Introduced to a framework that enhances the relationship development with Indigenous people.
