The Mary Ward Centre, the Jesuit Forum, and Regis College have collaborated to create to an Indigenous film series to help us enter more fully into the spirit of truth and reconciliation as Canadians.
Joined by Dr. and Elder, Bob Philips
We are also pleased that Dr. and Elder, Bob Philips, will join us in discussion to help us more deeply appreciate our chosen films in a meaningful way. Dr. Bob Phillips (Great Bear) is a non-Status Urban Mi’kmaq. Although a traditional Pipe Carrier, Bob is also very contemporary and holds a PhD in Indigenous Studies from Trent University. He also holds an MA in Fine Art History from York University as well as an Honours BA from the University of Toronto. Bob Phillips also spent ten years as host of the Aboriginal Voices Radio Arts Review show discussing art, culture, and contemporary issues with community members from across Canada and the Far North.
Film #2 of Series - 'Skaawaay K'uuna' ('Edge of the Knife')
Our second film in this series (Wednesday, January 11 @ 6:30), following Alanis Obomaswin's NFB documentary, 'Waban-Aki', will be critically appreciated 'Skaawaay K'uuna' ('Edge of the Knife'). 'Skaawaay K'uuna' is a 2018 Canadian drama film co-directed by Gwaai Edenshaw and Helen Haig-Brown. It is the first feature film spoken only in the Haida language (with english subtitles). Set in 19th-century Haida Gwaii, it tells the classic Haida story of a traumatized and stranded man transformed into Gaagiixiid, the wildman.
