McMaster University, Faculty of Health Science is engaged in the strategic development of an ‘Indigenous Health Initiative’. This work reflects the Faculty’s response to the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Final Report; Honouring the truth, reconciling for the future: summary of the final report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada.

The Commission’s ‘Calls to Action’with respect to health urges the acknowledgement of the direct link between the current state of health among Indigenous people in Canada and previous Canadian government policies including the residential school system. Efforts and strategies to establish measurable goals to identify and close the gaps in health outcomes between Indigenous people and their Canadian counterparts are required.

The Commission also calls for an increase in the number of Indigenous health professionals and the provision of cultural competency training for all health-care professionals. A clear role for medical and nursing schools has been articulated in Commission’s report.

The Faculty in its strategic effort to respond to the TRC’s Calls to Action, aspires to move forward with the development and implementation of an ‘Indigenous Health Initiative’ that will be in keeping with a reconciliation approach. We endeavour to engage and collaborate with our partners both on and off campus. As such, a ‘Visioning Session’ is planned for the above noted dates. This facilitated session will provide an opportunity to share updates regarding the progress of the IHI and engage participants in affirming and developing key elements of this work.

Meeting materials will be forwarded closer to the meeting date.
