Offered in partnership with Sam Ratulangi University (UNSRAT) in Manado Indonesia, SFU's new Virtual Field School: Bio-Cultural Diversity and Education will see students learn from and connect with scholars and practitioners living near the world's biodiversity epicenter.

Adopting a novel hybrid format, the virtual field school is designed to help students develop new perspectives on education and the environment through a variety of activities, including in-depth coursework, virtual and local field experiences. Much like its in-person predecessor, the virtual field school will equip students with new skills and methods for promoting environmental and ecological learning. It will focus on a range of topics, with particular attention paid to the emerging concept of bio-cultural diversity.

What to expect:

• Pre-course orientation session
• Optional field trips at the beginning and end of the semester
• Synchronous online classes weekly
• Remote learning opportunities with Sam Ratulangi University and a variety of local and international NGOs pursuing projects and research related to the course theme of bio-cultural diversity
• Short virtual visits to local communities and community organizations
• Interactions with international students and representatives of community organizations and schools from around the world
